Southern Railway Announces 6 Days Weekly Train Services from Coimbatore to Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli

Southern Railway has introduced enhanced train connectivity from Coimbatore to southern districts Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli with six days weekly services. The new schedule includes one weekly special service to Tirunelveli and five weekly services to Thoothukudi, combining existing and new summer special trains starting April 2026.

Coimbatore: Southern Railway has significantly enhanced train connectivity between Coimbatore and the southern districts of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli by introducing a comprehensive six days a week train service schedule. The improved connectivity aims to facilitate easier travel for passengers commuting between these important districts in Tamil Nadu.

The railway authorities have announced a new weekly special train service from Mettupalayam to Tirunelveli, designated as Train Number 06029. This service will operate from April 5, 2026, to June 7, 2026, departing from Mettupalayam at 19:45 hours and arriving at Coimbatore at 20:40 hours. The train will reach Madurai at 01:20 am, Tenkasi at 05:30 am, and finally arrive at Tirunelveli at 08:05 am, providing convenient overnight connectivity to passengers traveling to the southern districts.

In addition to the new Tirunelveli service, the railway has also augmented the existing Mettupalayam to Thoothukudi train service. The current bi-weekly service, Train Number 16765, operates on Sundays and Fridays, departing Mettupalayam at 19:45 hours, stopping at Coimbatore at 20:30 hours, reaching Madurai at 01:25 am, and arriving at Thoothukudi at 04:15 am. This existing service has been a vital link for passengers traveling to the port city of Thoothukudi.

To further improve connectivity during the summer season, Southern Railway will operate a tri-weekly summer special train to Thoothukudi. This additional service, whose train number is yet to be announced, will run from April 7, 2026, to June 4, 2026, completing 27 trips during this period. The summer special will operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, departing Mettupalayam at 19:45 hours, halting at Coimbatore at 20:30 hours, passing through Madurai at 01:25 am, and reaching Thoothukudi at 03:30 am.

With the combination of the existing bi-weekly service and the new tri-weekly summer special, passengers will now have five days of weekly train service to Thoothukudi. Including the weekly service to Tirunelveli, the total number of train services from Coimbatore to these southern districts will reach six days a week. This enhanced connectivity is expected to benefit business travelers, students, and families traveling between these regions, providing them with more flexibility in planning their journeys and strengthening the transportation network across Tamil Nadu.
