Heavy Rains Cause Flooding at Ponnuthu Waterfall Near Coimbatore

Continuous heavy rainfall in Coimbatore has led to flooding at Ponnuthu Waterfall near Thudiyalur. The waterfall, located on the hill of Ponnuthu Amman Temple, is experiencing a heavy water flow, affecting temple access.

Coimbatore: Heavy rains lashing Coimbatore have caused significant flooding at the Ponnuthu Waterfall, located on the hill of Ponnuthu Amman Temple near Thudiyalur. The waterfall is experiencing a heavy surge of water, making it impossible for devotees to access the temple premises.

The continuous downpour in Coimbatore is a result of a cyclonic circulation prevailing over South Tamil Nadu and the adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal. This weather system has been triggering heavy rainfall across various districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Nilgiris, and Theni, for the past two days.

The Ponnuthu Amman Temple, situated in Varappalayam near Thudiyalur, has been particularly affected by the heavy rains. The temple grounds are now inundated with floodwater from the overflowing Ponnuthu Waterfall, effectively cutting off access for worshippers. The situation has raised concerns about potential damage to the temple structure and the safety of visitors.

Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have advised residents and tourists to avoid visiting the area until the water levels recede. The continuous rainfall is expected to persist for a few more days, according to weather forecasts, potentially exacerbating the flooding situation in low-lying areas around Coimbatore.
