Coimbatore Police Announces WhatsApp Number to Report Extortion at Firecracker Shops

Coimbatore City Police has set up a WhatsApp number for reporting attempts to extort money or gifts from firecracker shops using official influence during Diwali season.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police has taken a proactive step to curb potential misuse of power during the festive season. In a Facebook post on October 15, the department announced a dedicated WhatsApp number for citizens to report any attempts of extortion or undue influence at firecracker shops.

The initiative targets government employees, journalists, media personnel, political party members, and individuals associated with caste or religious organizations who might try to leverage their position for personal gain. The police have urged the public to report such incidents if anyone from these groups attempts to obtain money or gifts from firecracker shops using their authority or influence.

Citizens can report such incidents by sending evidence to the Coimbatore City Police Control Room's WhatsApp number: 81900-00100. The police have assured that appropriate action will be taken based on the complaints received.

To encourage reporting, the department has emphasized that the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential. This measure aims to protect whistleblowers and ensure a fair and transparent festive season for all firecracker vendors in Coimbatore.

The move comes as part of the police department's efforts to maintain law and order during the Diwali season, typically marked by increased sales of firecrackers and heightened commercial activity. By setting up this reporting mechanism, the Coimbatore City Police aims to prevent corruption and ensure a level playing field for all businesses involved in firecracker sales.
