Nine Town Panchayats Along Noyyal River to Get Sewage Treatment Plants

Nine town panchayats along the Noyyal River in Coimbatore district will soon have sewage treatment plants. The project, approved by the National River Conservation Directorate, aims to prevent sewage from mixing with the river.

Coimbatore: The National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD) of the Ministry of Jal Shakthi has approved a proposal to construct sewage treatment plants (STPs) in nine town panchayats along the Noyyal River in Coimbatore district. This initiative aims to prevent untreated sewage from mixing with the river water.

The Noyyal River, a tributary of the Cauvery, originates in the Western Ghats in Coimbatore district and flows through Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, and Karur districts for 158.35 km before joining the Cauvery. In Coimbatore district alone, the river stretches for 62.21 km and is dotted with 17 dams and 25 ponds.

The nine town panchayats that will benefit from this project are Irugur, Sulur, Kannampalayam, Vellalore, Perur, Pooluvapatti, Veerapandi, Alandurai, and Thondamuthur. These STPs will treat the sewage collected from these areas, effectively preventing pollution of the Noyyal River.

An engineer from the Water Resources Organisation (WRO) stated, "Under the Nadanthai Vaazhi Cauvery scheme, the town panchayats were approved to set up sewage water treatment plants. The state and central government will allot funds for the same, and based on the population, funds will be allocated to each town panchayat for construction of the sewage treatment plant."

The construction of these STPs will commence once the funds are released by the government. This project is expected to significantly improve the water quality of the Noyyal River, which has been facing pollution issues due to the discharge of untreated sewage and solid waste from the surrounding urban and rural areas.

This initiative is part of a larger effort to conserve and rejuvenate the Noyyal River, which plays a crucial role in the region's ecosystem and water supply. By treating sewage before it enters the river, the project aims to restore the river's health and ensure cleaner water for downstream communities.
