TNAU Students to Participate in Seed Ball Throwing Programme at Karamadai Forest

TNAU students to throw 15,000 seed balls in Karamadai Forest on October 7, 2024, as part of a massive plantation drive. The event follows a successful seed ball preparation event held on September 28.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) is set to conduct a Seed Ball Throwing Programme at Karamadai Forest Range on October 7, 2024. This event follows the Mega Seed Ball Preparation Event held on September 28, where around 1,000 students and faculty members prepared over 15,000 seed balls.

On Monday, approximately 200 TNAU students will visit the Karamadai Forest Range to disperse these seed balls in identified locations. The initiative is part of the two crore Seed Ball Programme led by Prof. V. Geethalakshmi, Vice-Chancellor of TNAU. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department, ITC-Limited, and COODU NGO, Karamadai, will provide guidance and support for the event.

Prof. V. Geethalakshmi will flag off the massive plantation drive from TNAU to Karamadai Forest. Ranjith, Forest Range Officer, will guide the students in throwing the seed balls. The seeds to be dispersed include kassod tree, custard apple, silk cotton, Indian siris, neem, and Pacific rosewood. This effort aims to improve forest cover, enhance the hydrological behavior of forest watersheds, and provide shelter for wildlife.

As part of the event, an On-Field Poster Presentation contest will be conducted to create awareness about the importance of forest ecosystems and biodiversity. Winners of the contest will receive prizes in the presence of Dr. A. Raviraj, Dean of AEC&RI, Dr. Balakrishnan, Professor and Head of the Department of Food Process Engineering, Dinesh, Project Manager of ITC-Limited, Coimbatore, and Kathiresan, Director of COODU NGO.

The event is jointly organized by TNAU's Seed Centre, Eco Club, MasonAGE Club, Food Club, Rotaract Club, NSS, and the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, ITC-Limited, Coimbatore, and COODU NGO, Karamadai, in celebration of World Wildlife Week 2024.
