AIADMK Stages Human Chain Protest in Coimbatore Against Property Tax Hike

AIADMK members formed a human chain in front of Kuniyamuthur bus stand, Coimbatore, demanding the withdrawal of property tax increase. The protest, led by former minister S.P. Velumani, saw over 100 participants.

Coimbatore: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) staged a human chain protest in front of the Kuniyamuthur bus stand in Coimbatore on Sunday (Oct. 8), demanding the withdrawal of the recent property tax hike. This demonstration was part of a series of protests organized by the party across Tamil Nadu.

Former minister S.P. Velumani led the protest, which saw the participation of over 100 AIADMK members holding placards and raising slogans against the tax increase. The protesters emphasized that the 100% hike in property tax was unacceptable and would severely impact citizens across all sections of society.

Speaking to reporters, Velumani stated, "The 100% increase in property tax is unbearable for people from all walks of life. Annual hikes will only burden the public further." He highlighted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami had refrained from increasing charges, keeping the people's welfare in mind.

Velumani also addressed other issues affecting Coimbatore, particularly the impact of electricity tariff hikes on local industries. "Industries in Coimbatore are severely affected by the increase in electricity charges. We urge both the central and state governments to intervene and protect our industrial sector," he appealed.

The former minister called for stringent measures to curb drug abuse and reminded the public of various development projects initiated during the AIADMK regime, including road improvements, bridge constructions, and the Athikadavu-Avinashi scheme. The protest concluded peacefully, with the AIADMK members reiterating their demand for the immediate rollback of the property tax hike.
