Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital is set to organize a heart awareness rally on Saturday, September 28, 2024, in observance of World Heart Day.

The annual event, typically celebrated on September 29, aims to raise awareness about cardiovascular health and the importance of maintaining a healthy heart.

Dr. A. Nirmala MS DGO, Dean of Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital, will inaugurate the rally by waving a flag. The event underscores the critical role of the heart in supplying oxygen and nutrients to all cells in the body, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining cardiovascular health.

Experts highlight that heart disease, often caused by tobacco use, unhealthy dietary habits, and lack of physical exercise, leads to significant loss of life. In India alone, approximately 3 million people die annually due to heart-related issues, accounting for one-fifth of global cardiac fatalities. Heart disease is responsible for 60% of deaths caused by non-communicable diseases.

The Cardiology Department at Coimbatore Government Hospital serves an average of 8,000 to 9,000 outpatients and 300 inpatients monthly. The department conducts about 2,000 echocardiograms (ECHO) each month, while the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) treats between 200 to 250 patients monthly. Notably, the hospital provided excellent treatment to 2,151 heart attack patients last year, the highest number in Tamil Nadu.

Since the establishment of the Cath Lab in 2018, operating round the clock, the Cardiology Department has performed over 12,000 angiograms and angioplasties. Additionally, 84 patients have received permanent pacemaker implants. The department now utilizes advanced technologies like OCT, IVUS, and IABP for angioplasties.

To commemorate World Heart Day, the hospital is organizing a quiz competition for medical students, with prizes for the winners. The Cardiology Department will also honor doctors and nurses from various specialties for their contributions to cardiac care.
