Consumer Commission Orders Additional Payment for Covid-19 Treatment

In Coimbatore, the Consumer Commission has ordered an insurance company to pay additional compensation for Covid-19 treatment in response to a case filed against insufficient reimbursement.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered an insurance company to provide additional payment for Covid-19 treatment. This order was issued on Tuesday (September 26).

Natarajan (60), a resident of Kuniyamuthur in Coimbatore, was infected with Covid-19 in 2020. He subsequently received treatment at a private hospital in Sundarapuram. Natarajan, who had medical insurance with New India Insurance Company, applied for reimbursement of medical expenses amounting to Rs 2.87 lakhs. However, the insurance company only provided Rs 1.25 lakhs.

Dissatisfied with this, Natarajan filed a case with the Coimbatore Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission seeking the remaining amount and compensation. After hearing the case, the Commission President Thangavel and members ordered the insurance company to refund Rs 77,000 from the outstanding amount due to the petitioner. Additionally, they directed the insurance company to pay Rs 7,000 as compensation and Rs 5,000 as case expenses.

This order sets an important precedent, establishing that insurance companies should provide adequate compensation to Covid-19 patients. It has also instilled confidence in other patients who may have faced similar situations with their insurance claims.
