Kongu Global Forum Urges Union Minister for Eastern Bypass Road Project

Coimbatore associations request Nitin Gadkari to execute the 81 km Green Field Eastern bypass road connecting six major National Highways in the district, estimated at Rs 3945.86 crores.

Coimbatore: Several prominent associations in Coimbatore have jointly appealed to Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, to expedite the execution of the Green Field Coimbatore Eastern bypass road project. The proposed 81-kilometer road would connect six major National Highways in the district, including Mettupalayam road (NH181), Sathyamangalam road (NH948), Avinashi road (NH544), Trichy road (NH81), Pollachi road (NH83), and Palakkad road (NH544).

The appeal was made through a letter signed by representatives of key organizations, including Vanitha Mohan of Kongu Global Forum, Rajesh Lund of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Karthikeyan of Codissia, and Mithun Ramdass of SIEMA. The associations emphasized the critical nature of this infrastructure project for the development of the Western Tamil Nadu region.

In their letter, the associations highlighted that Western Tamil Nadu contributed 30% to the State GSDP in the last financial year, with goods and services exports worth Rs 1 lakh crores (13 billion US dollars). They also pointed out that Coimbatore, the second-largest city in the state with a population exceeding 30 lakhs, is located in this region.

The Coimbatore Eastern bypass Road project was initially proposed in 2016 along with the Coimbatore to Karur Expressway. A feasibility study report was prepared in 2018, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had decided to implement both projects for a distance of about 200 kilometers at an outlay of Rs 7500 crores across Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Karur districts.

However, the associations noted that the project has been pending approval from the Executive Committee, NHAI Headquarters, New Delhi, for over four years. They requested the Minister to delink the Coimbatore Eastern bypass road project and approve it in phases, with the first phase estimated at Rs 3945.86 crores according to the Draft Detailed Project Report (DPR).

The proposed Eastern bypass road, spanning from Narasimhanaickenpalayam to Kaniyur and further to Madukkarai, is expected to bring significant benefits to the region. The associations predict that the land use pattern along the road will change dramatically, providing opportunities for new high-rise buildings, software parks, residential areas, and shopping malls. Additionally, new industrial zones, foundry clusters, and textile units are expected to benefit from this greenfield bypass road.

The associations also mentioned a second phase of the project, involving a 120-kilometer Karur and Coimbatore Green Field highway, which could reduce travel time between destinations to just one to one and a half hours. They emphasized that the proposed alignment of this highway passes through dry lands in the three districts, which could be utilized to establish large industrial estates, complementing the growth of MSMEs in the region.

In conclusion, the associations stressed the importance of this critical infrastructure project for the development of Western Tamil Nadu and urged the Minister to take necessary steps to implement the project immediately in two phases, which they believe will significantly contribute to the growth of the entire region.
