Pollachi Postal Employees Protest, Demand Arrest of Senior Official Linked to Female Colleague's Death

Postal employees in Pollachi staged a protest on September 19, demanding the dismissal and arrest of a senior official allegedly responsible for a female postal worker's suicide in Tirumangalam.

Coimbatore: Postal employees in Pollachi staged a protest on Tuesday, demanding the dismissal and arrest of a senior official allegedly responsible for the death of a female postal worker in Tirumangalam, Madurai district.

The protesters, wearing black badges, gathered at the Pollachi Head Post Office to voice their concerns over the tragic incident involving Sumathi, a postal employee from Tirumangalam. According to reports, Sumathi took her own life due to work-related stress and alleged harassment by Deeparajan, a postal inspector at the same office.

The demonstrators claimed that Deeparajan had overburdened Sumathi with excessive work and reportedly made derogatory remarks about her family, leading to her mental distress and subsequent suicide. While the postal inspector has been transferred following the incident, the protesting employees argue that this action is insufficient.

The postal workers are demanding Deeparajan's immediate suspension, arrest, and appropriate punishment to ensure justice for their deceased colleague. They also expressed concern over the practice of setting unrealistic targets for postal employees, which they claim puts undue pressure on workers.

The protest has shed light on the working conditions within the postal department and the need for better safeguards to protect employees from harassment and excessive work pressure. As the demonstration continues, postal authorities are under increasing pressure to address these concerns and take decisive action in the case of Sumathi's death.
