Rahul Gandhi Criticizes BJP’s Treatment of Annapoorna Srinivasan in Coimbatore

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition, condemns the government's response to a Coimbatore restaurant owner's request for a simplified GST regime, highlighting the contrast in treatment between small businesses and billionaires.

Coimbatore: Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition and Member of Parliament, has strongly criticized the government's treatment of small businesses, citing a recent incident involving the owner of Annapoorna restaurant in Coimbatore. Gandhi expressed his disappointment over the arrogant and disrespectful response the business owner received when requesting a simplified GST regime.

In his statement, Gandhi contrasted this treatment with the government's approach to billionaires, saying, "When a billionaire friend seeks to bend the rules, change the laws, or acquire national assets, Modi Ji rolls out the red carpet." He emphasized that small business owners, who have already faced numerous challenges, do not deserve further humiliation.

Gandhi highlighted the struggles faced by small businesses, including the impacts of demonetization, an inaccessible banking system, tax extortion, and what he termed a "disastrous GST." He criticized the government's response to criticism, suggesting that when the "fragile egos of those in power are hurt," they respond with humiliation.

The opposition leader also pointed out that MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) have been seeking relief for years. He advocated for a simplified GST system with a single tax rate, claiming it would "solve the problems of lakhs of businesses." Gandhi accused the government of being arrogant and unwilling to listen to the people's concerns.

This incident has brought attention to the ongoing debate about the GST regime and its impact on small businesses in India, particularly in cities like Coimbatore, known for their entrepreneurial spirit and small-scale industries.
