Ooty Introduces 400m Walking Path on Commercial Road to Enhance Pedestrian Accessibility

Nilgiris District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru inspected a 400m walking path on Commercial Road in Udhagamandalam on September 5, 2024. The initiative aims to make the town more pedestrian-friendly and improve safety for walkers.

Coimbatore: In a bid to make Udhagamandalam (Ooty) more accessible to pedestrians, the Nilgiris District administration has introduced a 400-meter walking path along Commercial Road. District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru inspected the stretch between Charring Cross and Casino Junction on the evening of September 5, 2024.

The initiative, currently in its trial phase, is a collaborative effort between the district administration and the police. It aims to address the congestion caused by parked vehicles belonging to patrons of businesses along Commercial Road, which often hindered pedestrian movement and safety.

Collector Tanneeru, accompanied by Nilgiris district Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha, spoke to reporters after the inspection. She highlighted that the stretch attracts numerous domestic and international tourists, often becoming overcrowded with visitors and local residents.

The walking path is expected to provide a safer and more enjoyable shopping experience for pedestrians. Previously, cars and two-wheelers parked along the roadside limited space and posed risks to walkers. Police officials expressed hope that the new arrangement would significantly improve pedestrian safety.

Tanneeru also pointed out the potential economic benefits of the initiative. By attracting more foot traffic, local businesses along Commercial Road could see increased patronage. A local business owner welcomed the move, stating that the lack of parking space had previously deterred potential customers. He suggested that providing adequate parking facilities in surrounding areas could further enhance the effectiveness of the walking path.

The district administration plans to gather feedback from local business owners after the trial phase to determine whether the walking path should be made permanent. This approach ensures that the needs of both pedestrians and local businesses are considered in the final decision.

The introduction of this walking path reflects a growing trend in urban planning that prioritizes pedestrian-friendly spaces, potentially setting a precedent for similar initiatives in other tourist destinations across India.
