FSSAI Instructs E-Commerce Food Businesses to Remove A1 & A2 Claims from Milk Products

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed all E-Commerce Food Business Operators to remove claims related to A1 & A2 differentiation in milk and milk products to ensure compliance with FSS regulations.

Coimbatore: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a clarification instructing all E-Commerce Food Business Operators (FBOs) to remove any claims regarding the A1 and A2 differentiation of milk and milk products such as ghee, butter, and curd. This directive follows reports that several FBOs were using A1 & A2 claims under their FSSAI License Number and/or Registration Certificate Number.

The FSSAI has clarified that the differentiation of milk into A1 and A2 is linked to a difference in the structure of the beta casein protein, and the use of such claims on milk products is deemed misleading and non-compliant with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its regulations. The current standards of milk, as specified in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, do not recognize any differentiation between A1 and A2 milk types.

FBOs have been instructed to remove these claims from their products immediately. E-commerce platforms must also remove all A1 and A2-related claims from their websites. Strict compliance with this directive is expected from the date of issuance, although FBOs are allowed to exhaust their existing pre-printed labels within six months. No further extensions will be granted for compliance.

This direction was issued with the approval of the Competent Authority of FSSAI and has been communicated to all relevant state and regional food safety authorities for enforcement.
