Coimbatore Airport Expansion: Land to be handed over without any preconditions to AAI

The CM MK Stalin led TN govt will transfer both patta and government poramboke land to AAI free of cost, without any conditions, on a 99-year lease. However, the State has requested the Centre to consider revenue sharing in the event of airport privatization.

Coimbatore: The long-awaited expansion of Coimbatore International Airport is finally set to become a reality as the Tamil Nadu government has decided to hand over the acquired land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) unconditionally. This move marks a significant milestone in the project that has been pending for more than two decades.

The State government will transfer both patta and government poramboke land to AAI free of cost, without any conditions, on a 99-year lease. However, the State has requested the Centre to consider revenue sharing in the event of airport privatization.

The airport expansion project dates back to 2010 when a Government Order was issued. Approximately 600 acres were identified for acquisition, including 468.83 acres of private land. The acquisition process faced numerous challenges over the years. Since 2018, the State government has been allocating funds for land acquisition, with a total of ₹2,088.91 crore provided so far.

Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati recently announced that nearly 97% of the land had been acquired, with the entire process expected to be completed within two weeks.

Vanathi Srinivasan, BJP MLA from Coimbatore South, expressed gratitude to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for handing over the land to AAI unconditionally. Coimbatore MP Ganapathi P. Rajkumar praised the Chief Minister's efforts in resolving contentious issues, highlighting the expansion's potential benefits for the entire western region.

"I had explained its importance to the Chief Minister and the Ministers concerned, and it was taken well. This is one of the many steps by the Chief Minister for Coimbatore's development," Rajkumar stated, emphasizing the project's significance for the city's growth.
