Breeding Season of Russell's Viper in Coimbatore: Public Warned

A Russell's Viper was discovered in Vedapatti, Coimbatore. During breeding season, over 30 offspring are born. Snake catcher expert advises public to exercise caution.

Coimbatore: A Russell's Viper was recently spotted near the entrance of a house in the Vedapatti area of Coimbatore. The incident was reported to Vignesh, a member of a voluntary organization for wildlife and nature conservation, who is also a skilled snake catcher.

Vignesh promptly arrived at the location, safely rescued the snake, and released it into its natural habitat as per forest department guidelines. Speaking about the incident, Vignesh said, "Russell's Viper are highly venomous. In India, the majority of snake bite fatalities are caused by spectacled cobras."

He further added, "Currently, it's the breeding season for Russell's Viper. Each female snake gives birth to more than 30 offspring. These young snakes can be found roaming in various places. As they resemble rat snakes, people might mistakenly think they are non-venomous and attempt to catch them, which is extremely dangerous."

Vignesh warned, "Snakes should not be killed when encountered. Instead, people should immediately inform the forest department or snake catchers. They will safely rescue the snakes and release them in their natural habitats."

The recent death of snake catcher Murali in Coimbatore due to a Russell's Viper bite, and a young boy currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital for a snake bite, emphasize the critical need for public vigilance during this season.
