Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu government has taken a significant step towards realizing the dream of a world-class cricket stadium in Coimbatore. A tender has been floated to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of an international cricket stadium, with ambitions to make it the largest in terms of seating capacity in the country.

Sports Department officials have confirmed that a Request for Proposal (RFP) has been issued to prepare the DPR and engage a design consultant for the development of the international cricket stadium. Bidders have been given a one-month window to submit their proposals.

The Proposed land is 30.36 acres and out of which the stadium will come in 20.18 acres and a multilevel car parking in 10.18 acres of land in Singanallur and Irugur village taluka.

The Sports Department envisions a state-of-the-art facility that will boast the "largest spectator seating capacity in the country." The stadium will feature five-star amenities for members, VIP and corporate sectors, along with modern player lounges, media and broadcasting centers, public cafeterias and restaurants, viewing galleries, and a cricket museum.

Additionally, the plan includes an indoor practice arena, specialist indoor fielding zone, pitch curation training facilities, lecture theatres, and a high-performance center. The project also aims to incorporate player-centric facilities such as restaurants, spas, dormitories, and recreation areas. A members' clubhouse, sports bar, and restaurant are also part of the proposed plan.

The government has recommended the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's Chepauk constituency and M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as live case studies for the project. The iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London has been cited as a net case study.

The tender also outlines objectives for the bidders to create a forum for research and rehabilitation for players, umpires, technicians, and coaches. The government is seeking to incorporate the latest concepts in stadium design, including advanced technological infrastructure for media, administration, marketing, and PR-related support, as well as high-standard public seating and hospitality facilities.

This ambitious project, if realized, could potentially put Coimbatore on the global cricket map and provide a world-class sporting facility for the region.
