Coimbatore: DMK members in Coimbatore held a peace rally to mark the 6th death anniversary of their former leader, Kalaignar Karunanidhi. The rally, led by Minister Muthusammy, began from VKK Menon Road in Sidhapudur and proceeded to Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand.

At the conclusion of the rally, participants paid floral tributes to Karunanidhi's portrait near the Anna statue adjacent to the Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Minister Muthusammy said, "Kalaignar's passing was a day of sorrow for people across India. In various villages and panchayats, the public is expressing their emotions on this remembrance day."

Regarding Karunanidhi's memorial, he explained, "When Kalaignar passed away, the government initially didn't permit a memorial near Anna Memorial on Marina Beach in Chennai. After filing a case in court, an order was issued within 10 hours to allocate that space for Kalaignar's memorial."

The Minister further added, "Work is underway to unveil Kalaignar's statue in Kaniyur. All necessary permissions have been obtained properly for erecting this statue. On August 9, DMK leader and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will visit, complete government functions, and then inaugurate the statue."

Minister Muthusammy also provided details about the Chief Minister's upcoming Coimbatore visit. "On August 9, the Chief Minister will participate in the Makkaludan Mudhalvar program at Coimbatore Government Arts College and inaugurate a section of the elevated corridor in Ukkadam area. Subsequently, he will unveil Kalaignar's statue in Kaniyur. Besides the statue, a library has also been established beneath it," he stated.
