Coimbatore: A construction worker from Dharmapuri district has gone missing after undertaking an unauthorized trek to the Velliangiri Hills in Coimbatore, prompting forest officials and police to launch a search operation.

The Velliangiri Hills, located about 30 km from Coimbatore, is part of the Western Ghats and is known as the "South Kailash" among devotees. It serves as both a spiritual and tourist destination. Typically, trekking is permitted from February to May, coinciding with the Maha Sivaratri festival.

Forest officials had imposed restrictions on public entry into forest areas since June. Despite these warnings, it is reported that a group of individuals, including the missing person identified as Muniyaraj, ventured into the hills without proper authorization about a week ago.

The incident came to light when Muniyaraj failed to return with the group. Upon receiving this information, forest officials immediately formed a five-member team to conduct a search operation. As of August 6, the team continues its efforts to locate the missing trekker.

The Alandurai Police have also initiated an investigation into the incident. This event highlights the importance of adhering to forest department regulations and the potential risks associated with unauthorized treks in restricted areas.

Authorities are urging the public to respect the trekking restrictions and emphasizing the need for proper permissions before embarking on such adventures, especially during prohibited periods.
