Farmers Demand Desilting of Overgrown Alangulam Near Udumalaipettai

Farmers in Jallipatti panchayat near Udumalaipettai call for desilting and restoration of the 25-acre Alangulam tank, which has become overgrown due to neglect, affecting water storage and agriculture in the area.

Coimbatore: In a plea for urgent action, farmers from Jallipatti panchayat near Udumalaipettai in Tirupur district have called upon local authorities to desilt and restore the Alangulam tank, a crucial water body that has fallen into disrepair.

The 25-acre Alangulam tank, which serves as a primary water source for the surrounding areas of Jallipatti panchayat, has not been properly desilted for several years. As a result, it has become overgrown with bushes and is subject to encroachments, severely impacting its water storage capacity.

Jallipatti panchayat, home to over 1,000 families, relies heavily on this tank for its water needs. However, the neglect of the water body by the DMK-led panchayat administration has led to a significant reduction in its ability to collect and store rainwater during the monsoon season.

Farmers in the area have expressed their concerns, stating that the lack of maintenance has resulted in wastage of precious rainwater. They argue that if the tank is desilted, its banks strengthened, and encroachments removed, it would significantly increase the water inflow and storage capacity.

The agricultural community has urged the panchayat administration to take immediate steps to clear the overgrowth, remove encroachments, and create proper water channels. They believe these measures will not only address the drinking water scarcity in the region but also boost agricultural activities that depend on this vital water source.

As the demand for action grows, all eyes are on the local authorities to see how they will respond to this pressing issue that affects the livelihoods and water security of thousands of residents in the Jallipatti panchayat area.
