Housing Minister Muthuswamy visited Valparai and Pollachi to offer condolences and financial aid to families affected by recent house collapses. He assured quality construction of future government housing projects.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Housing Minister and Coimbatore District In-charge Minister Muthuswamy visited Valparai and Pollachi on Sunday to offer condolences and financial assistance to families affected by recent house collapses due to heavy rains and landslides.

In Valparai, the minister handed over a cheque of Rs. 3 lakhs to the family of Rajeswari and her granddaughter Janapriya, who lost their lives when their house collapsed due to a landslide near Sholayar Dam. Similarly, in Thippampatti village near Pollachi, he consoled the family of Hariharasudhan, a 20-year-old youth who died when his house collapsed, and presented them with a cheque of Rs. 3 lakhs from the state government and an additional Rs. 50,000 from the DMK party.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Minister Muthuswamy addressed concerns about the quality of government housing projects. He stated, "Apart from the existing multi-storey residential buildings constructed by the Housing Department, new residential projects will be awarded to contractors only after obtaining assurances about the durability of the structures."

The minister emphasized the importance of proper maintenance for the longevity of multi-storey buildings. He urged residents to take initiatives such as removing plant growth on building exteriors to ensure the structures' durability.

Muthuswamy also highlighted the current government's efforts to improve housing conditions. "After the DMK government took charge, we identified 60 locations where Housing Department buildings rented out were in extremely poor condition. We ordered the demolition of 10,000 such dwellings, and 90% of these structures have already been razed," he said. The minister added that steps are being taken to construct new residential buildings in these locations for government employees and officials.
