Cauvery Water Management Authority Meeting to be Held in Delhi Today

The 32nd meeting of the Cauvery Water Management Authority is scheduled for today in Delhi. Officials from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry will participate to discuss water release and pending court cases.

Coimbatore: The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) is set to convene its 32nd meeting today (24.07.2024) at 2:30 PM in Delhi. The meeting, chaired by CWMA Chairman S.K. Haldar, will see participation from water resources officials of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry.

The meeting is expected to focus on the water release from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu. Additionally, discussions may include pending cases in the Madurai and Bengaluru High Courts related to the Cauvery water dispute.

This meeting follows the 99th meeting of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee held on July 11, 2024, via video conference. During that meeting, it was recommended that Karnataka release 1 TMC of water daily to Tamil Nadu from July 12 to July 31, 2024. Karnataka officials were also instructed to ensure that the water flow at Biligundulu, the entry point to Tamil Nadu, maintains at 1 TMC.

Meanwhile, Karnataka has been experiencing intermittent heavy rainfall since the first week of July due to the southwest monsoon. This has led to increased water inflow in major dams in the Cauvery catchment areas, including Mysuru, Kodagu, and Hassan districts. As a result, water levels in key reservoirs like Krishnaraja Sagar, Kabini, and Hemavathi have risen significantly, leading to the release of surplus water into the Cauvery river.

The CWMA meeting is likely to address these recent developments and their impact on water sharing between the states. The outcome of this meeting is crucial for both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, as it will influence water management decisions in the coming weeks.
