District-level committee meeting held to prevent wildlife deaths in Coimbatore

A district-level committee meeting was held at the Coimbatore Collectorate to discuss preventive measures against wildlife deaths caused by explosives, country-made bombs, and electrocution in forest areas.

Coimbatore: A district-level committee meeting was held at the Coimbatore Collectorate on July 22 to discuss preventive measures against wildlife deaths caused by explosives, country-made bombs, and electrocution in forest areas. The meeting was chaired by District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati and attended by District Forest Officer Jayaraj and several farmers.

Forest department staff and electricity board employees are conducting joint inspections in areas adjacent to forests within the Coimbatore Forest Division. During these inspections, low-hanging electric wires and damaged leaning electric poles are identified and immediately rectified.

From April 2023 to June 30, 2024, approximately 2000 low-hanging electric wires and damaged leaning electric poles were identified and repaired. Steps have also been taken to replace severely damaged electric poles.

The authorities are also inspecting electric fences in agricultural lands bordering forest areas, along with electricity board staff, to ensure that only the permitted voltage levels are being used.

In the forest ranges under the Coimbatore Forest Division, continuous field inspections are being conducted in collaboration with the police department to prevent poaching of wildlife using country-made bombs (outu kai). In the past year, six forest crime cases have been registered for poaching using country-made bombs, and information has been passed to the police department for filing cases related to the use of explosives.

Following this, a District Fire and Industrial Safety Committee meeting was held under the chairmanship of the District Collector. District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati instructed the concerned department officials to monitor the implementation of standard operating procedures related to fire and industrial safety, create awareness among license holders about fire prevention, and conduct community training and awareness programs for fire prevention and mitigation.
