The National Highways Authority is seeking approval for Rs 300 crore to begin the second phase of the Western Ring Road project in Coimbatore. The 32.43 km road aims to reduce traffic congestion in the city.

Coimbatore: The National Highways Authority is awaiting approval for a Rs 300 crore budget to commence the second phase of the Western Ring Road project in Coimbatore district. This ambitious project, spanning 32.43 kilometers, is designed to alleviate traffic congestion in Coimbatore city.

The Western Ring Road will start near Madukkarai on Palakkad Road and end at Narasimhanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore district, passing through 15 revenue villages. The project is divided into three phases, with land acquisition and construction being carried out by the State Highways Department.

The first phase, covering 11.80 km, is progressing rapidly. Work on bridges, small culverts, cross-drainage structures, and earthwork is underway in these areas. So far, 25% of the work has been completed, with 5 km of road formation and 2 km of tarred road already in place.

For the second phase, covering 12.10 km up to Perur West Chithiraichavadi, land acquisition has been completed. In Kalikanaickenpalayam and Vadavalli villages, 80% of the work has been finished. The authorities aim to complete these works by August and the land acquisition in Somayampalayam by September.

The third phase will involve the construction of 8.52 km of ring road, with land acquisition expected to take an additional six months. The Tamil Nadu government has already allocated funds for land acquisition in the second and third phases.

The State Highways Department has prepared an estimate of Rs 300 crore for road construction in the second phase. This report has been sent to the Tamil Nadu government, seeking administrative and technical approval, as well as fund allocation for this financial year. Officials indicate that this process alone could take up to six months.

Authorities recently stated that if preliminary work for the second phase begins before the completion of the first phase, the entire Western Ring Road project can progress continuously without interruption. This approach would ensure that the project doesn't stall midway and continues to move forward efficiently.
