2 rogue jumbos identified, will be relocated soon

On the second day of operation to relocate rogue elephants, which killed three people last week, the forest department identified the two aggressive elephants, namely CBT- 1 (Cherambadi Broken Tusker) and CT -6 (Cherambadi Tusker) in Pandalur area. The chief wildlife warden has granted permission to capture and relocate the identified elephants.

"The two tuskers are found wandering between Cherambadi and Pandalur. Based on circumstantial evidences and witnesses account we were able to identify two male elephants who were already numbered," said S N Thejasvi, district forest officer (Gudalur division). He added, "Both the elephants seem very aggressive and have been wandering on a steep terrain on Sunday. The animals are at present being monitored."

A team has been set up and it comprise of two forest veterinarians and forest rangers to carry on the operation. Besides, four kumkis have also been pressed into service. The area where the elephants have been wandering has also been cordoned off. Once the elephants are captured, the next step will be proposed after checking their health condition and behaviour, said the DFO.
