Coimbatore Dance Artists Demand Action Against Indecent Performances

Coimbatore dance artists seek permission for legitimate performances and urge action against those organizing indecent events. They submitted a petition at the District Collector's office today.

Coimbature: Over 500 dance artists in Coimbatore, along with their families, have voiced concerns over indecent events masquerading as cultural festivals.

They rallied outside the District Collector’s office on July 3rd, disguised as cultural icons like MGR, Captain Vijayakanth, and MR Radha, and presented a petition demanding action.

The artists who have been performing in temple festivals for more than 40 years argued that they maintain decorum and culture in their shows. According to a verdict from the Chennai High Court, legitimate dance performers are subjected to stringent conditions. Former Tamil Nadu Police chief, Saleindra Babu, has mandated that those engaging in indecent events at such festivals will face charges under the Sexual Harassment Act.

Amidst concerns, Jayanthi Anandhan from Perur Kalampalayam and Danapal from Karumathampatti have been accused by the dancers of tarnishing the district’s image by disregarding the High Court’s orders and organizing vulgar performances in temple festivals across Coimbatore and other parts of Tamil Nadu.

Such activities not only defame genuine artists but also jeopardize their livelihood. Consequently, the dance community has filed a contempt of court case against the individuals involved, seeking legal action to safeguard their profession and culture.
