Initially when laparoscopic surgery was introduced, several people were sceptical about this surgery. However, over a period of time, this surgery has become very popular and it currently has many takers. With the advancements in science and technology, a new procedure called robotic surgery has become the norm of the day. Robotic surgery, experts say has several advantages over the traditional surgery and laparoscopic surgery.
Speaking to us about robotic surgery, Dr. K S Rajkumar, general, laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) says “There is a misconception about robotic surgery in the minds of people. No robots are used to perform the surgery. Instead robotic arms are used. The robotic arms are controlled by the surgeon who sits in a console. While performing surgeries for uterine diseases and also for cancer, the robotic surgery method, better results are achieved.” Dr. K S Rajkumar says.
At KMCH in order to encourage patients opt for robotic surgery, currently, this hospital charges its patients on par what it charges them for laparoscopic surgery. Last month Dr. K S Rajkumar performed a surgery on a patient who was diagnosed with low rectal cancer. Sharing his experience this doctor says “This patient was over 70 years of age from Coimbatore. Performing this surgery on him, using robotic arms had several advantages over the laparoscopic method. Performing surgeries for uterine cancer the robotic method gives better results.”
“I am confident just like how the awareness about laparoscopic method spread and become popular among people, the robotic surgery method too will take its own time to become popular.”
