Edappadi K. Palaniswami Criticizes DMK Government Over Kuruvai Cultivation Scheme

Former Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami labeled the Kuruvai cultivation package as a ‘political deception’. Accused DMK government of failing to secure Karnataka's Cauvery water share for Tamil Nadu.

Coimbatore: In a strong statement issued on June 15, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami condemned the DMK government for its handling of the Kuruvai cultivation scheme, calling it a “political charade”. According to Palaniswami, the inadequate efforts by the DMK have resulted in Tamil Nadu's inability to procure its rightful share of water from the Cauvery River from Karnataka, which has especially impacted delta region farmers.

He detailed that despite introducing the Kuruvai special package during the AIADMK’s tenure to offer a solution during water crises, the DMK has not taken adequate measures to secure water for the 2024-25 cultivation seasons in May and June. This inaction has led to protests among delta farmers.

Furthermore, he pointed out that while his government had successfully provided 24-hour three-phase electricity and ensured the availability of subsidized irrigation tools to delta districts, the DMK administration has failed to undertake similar measures. He criticized the current regime for not acting on commitments like subsidizing seeds and fertilizers and questioned the use of funds designated for such agricultural supports.

Calling the move a mere eyewash to cover up their inability to negotiate with Karnataka's Congress government over water shares, Palaniswami accused the DMN of focusing solely on short-sighted, emergency-level politics that fail to address the real needs of delta farmers.

The news underscores growing tensions and the critical need for effective governance addressing agricultural water needs in Tamil Nadu.
