Tamil Nadu Government Decides to Relax Conditions for Coimbatore Airport Expansion

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to relax the conditions imposed on the expansion of Coimbatore Airport, with an official announcement expected after June 4.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Airport expansion project, originally announced by the DMK government in 2010, is set to see progress as the Tamil Nadu government has decided to relax some of the conditions related to land provision. Due to a change in the state government, the expansion project stagnated for 10 years, but it has been revived after DMK resumed power in 2021. A budget of ₹2,600 crore was allocated for land acquisition and other initial works to accelerate the expansion.

District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati mentioned that discussions are ongoing in Chennai regarding the land provision for the expansion project, and an official announcement is likely after June 4 due to the electoral code of conduct. According to the initial terms, the land would be provided free of cost to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) if managed by them, and if managed by a private entity, additional funds would have to be routed through rental agreements.

Airport Director Senthilvalavan added that once the land is handed over, immediately infrastructure enhancements worth ₹1,000 crore will commence, with an additional ₹500 crore anticipated from the AAI headquarters.

CI Coimbatore former president Ravisam and ICICI Coimbatore former president Nanda Kumar expressed that extending the runway will facilitate handling of wide-bodied aircraft, making it easier to commence international flights to Dubai and other countries. They noted that the expansion would greatly benefit industrial growth in Coimbatore and the surrounding Kongu region.
