Coimbatore District Collector Urges for Comprehensive Rainwater Harvesting During Workshop

Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati emphasizes the need for comprehensive rainwater harvesting systems in homes, businesses, and factories to prevent water logging and enhance groundwater levels, discussed in a seminar at RS Puram Auditorium.

Coimbatore: In a focused effort to boost environmental sustainability, District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati addressed the pressing need for efficient rainwater harvesting systems during a seminar held in RS Puram's auditorium. The seminar, organized on June 1, 2024, highlighted the inefficiencies of existing structures and outlined necessary enhancements to maximize rainwater capture.

Collector Pati stressed on the critical need to repair and enhance rainwater harvesting systems across residential, commercial, and industrial properties in Coimbatore. He mentioned that while Coimbatore is blessed with natural water bodies like Noyyal and Siruvani rivers, rapid urbanization and climate change have posed significant challenges in water management.

Residents are urged to ensure that their rainwater systems are well maintained to prevent overflow on roads during the rainy season, thereby reducing potential water logging and increasing the groundwater levels. The workshop also celebrated recent renovations of seven key tanks – Krishnampathi, Selvampathi, Kumaraswami, Selvasindamani, Periyakulam, Valankulam, and Kurichi Kulam. The revitalization of these sources is a step towards sustainable water management in the region.

Additionally, the City Engineer, presented at the seminar, emphasized the importance of regular inspections and maintenance of these systems to ensure optimal functionality. The municipality now mandates rainwater harvesting structures be integrated in all new building plans. This proactive approach not only addresses the imminent need for water conservation but also aligns with broader environmental objectives to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

In closing, the spirited assembly of city officials, engineers, and community activists collectively agreed to a collaborative commitment to enhance and maintain rainwater harvesting infrastructure to secure a sustainable future for all residents in the Coimbatore district.
