Close to 1.5 tonnes of rice that were meant to be distributed through the public distribution system (PDS) was seized at the Coimbatore Central Railway Station.
Based on a tip off, a team of officials led by District Supply Officer, Saravanan today inspected a train en-route to Thrissur, Kerala. The 1.5 tonnes of rice intended to be kidnapped was concealed in small gunny bags. During the vigil, the officials confiscated the rice bags. However, no offenders were arrested.
Speaking on this, District Supply Officer, Saravanan, said, 'Smuggling of rice to Kerala has become a common phenomenon as there are lot of entry points from Coimbatore to Kerala. We have now identified all the entry points and added tight vigil at all check points. Offenders who are indulged in smuggling rice that is meant for PDS will attract legal action'.
