Farmers in Kundadam and surrounding areas are intensifying the cultivation of small onions, a crop that yields substantial profit with minimal water usage, amid arid conditions.
Tirupur: In the arid regions of Kundadam, including areas like Sooriyanallur, Mettukadai, Thumbalapatti, Veruvedampalayam, Kungumampalayam, and Othakkadai massive efforts are underway to harvest small onions, a crop well suited for low water consumption. With recent rains and water supply from PAP canal, locals have been encouraged to grow high-profit, low-water-demanding crops such as tomatoes, chillies, eggplant, and small onions. The suitable soil in the area also contributes to good yields.
Farmers have adopted crops that require little water due to the inherently dry conditions of the region, making small onions a popular choice. This focus comes after substantial rainfall in recent months, which has allowed extensive cultivation of these vegetables. Previous seasons recorded good sales when small onions were sold for Rs 40-50 per kilogram. Looking ahead, prices are expected to rise further.
The cost involved in cultivating small onions is approximately Rs 75,000 per acre, covering seeds, labor, and inputs. Despite rising costs for fertilizers and other materials, farmers remain hopeful about getting better prices for their crops in the coming days.
