Sanitation workers in Coimbatore's Othakalmandapam allege mistreatment likened to slavery by local officials. They submitted a petition seeking action and stable employment conditions on April 30.

Coimbatore: Dozens of sanitation workers employed at Othakalmandapam Town Panchayat in Coimbatore District have raised serious allegations against local authorities. Accusing the officials of treating them like slaves and verbally abusing them, the workers appealed to the district administration for urgent intervention. On April 30, they submitted a petition at the district collector's office.

The petition not only highlighted instances of mistreatment but also pushed for part-time work, permanent positions, and other improvements in their employment conditions. Rathanakumar, a representative of the Rural Development Department Workers' Union in Coimbatore, emphasized the need for granting part-time work, permanent contracts, and salary increments.

Further complaints by the sanitation workers included improper behavior by the site supervisors, who allegedly intimidate and exploit the workers. The representatives stressed the need for action from the District Collector to address these grievances and ensure better working conditions for all involved.
