Farmers in Kangayam Boycott Elections, Protest with Black Flags

In Kangayam, Tiruppur, over 500 farmers from PABI irrigational union boycotted the parliamentary elections, protesting against water theft and demanding equitable distribution, by surrendering their voter IDs.

Coimbatore: A significant protest unfolded in Kangayam, Tiruppur District, as over 500 farmers, part of the PABI irrigational union, boycotted the parliamentary elections. The farmers, lifting black flags, expressed their dissent by surrendering their voter IDs to the local authorities. They were protesting against persistent issues of water theft and inequitable water distribution which have not been addressed despite their repeated complaints to the concerned departments and police stations.

The entire region was engulfed in tension as about 100 police officers were deployed at the protest site to ensure safety and order. The PABI farmers made a public statement about their grievances and declared that they would continue their protest unless the officials take immediate action to resolve their issues. This move came after their demands for dialogue with the officials were consistently ignored, compelling them to abstain from voting as a form of protest.
