The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court passed orders on 10th February, 2017 to uproot all Seemai Karuvellam trees across the State and ordered the District Administration of each district to submit a report.

A comprehensive meeting in this regard with officials from various departments was convened at the District Collectorate to completely eliminate Seemai Karuvellam trees (Prosopis juliflora) from the district of Coimbatore.
In this connection, Coimbatore District Collector T.N. Hariharan has passed orders for removing the invasive species from all water bodies, reserve sites and from all empty barren lands as it is proven to deplete the ground water table.

A stringent action plan to clear off this invasive tree species was discussed in detail. Officials were asked to carry a complete assessment of the land area infested with Seemai Karuvellam trees in the district of Coimbatore.
District Revenue Officer, Durairavichandran, Deputy Director for Panchayat, Karuppaiah and officials from other departments were present during the discussion session.
