Lone Wild Elephant Strays into Perur, Causing Stir Among Residents

In Coimbatore's Perur, a lone wild elephant wandered into residential areas from the Madukkarai forest range, prompting efforts by forest officials to guide it back, leading to traffic disruptions for about an hour.

Coimbatore: A lone wild elephant strayed into the residential areas of Perur, causing concern among the locals. This incident comes as over 30 wild elephants have camped in areas including Karadimadai, Madhampatti, and Irutupallam within the Madukkarai forest range. Water scarcity in the Western Ghats has pushed these elephants to raid nearby villages during the night in search of food and water. Not only do they damage crops, but they also consume rice and cattle feed stored in homes, instilling fear among the residents.

Last night, a solitary elephant from the Madukkarai forest range entered Vedapatti village, falling under the Coimbatore forest range. Upon receiving the information, forest officials engaged in efforts to drive the elephant back to the forest. However, the elephant managed to elude the officials.

Following this, reports emerged today of the elephant being spotted near the Perur Tamil College. Forest officials rushed to the location, finding that it was indeed the same elephant they had been searching for. Efforts are ongoing to guide the elephant back to the forest, causing temporary traffic disruptions in the area for around an hour. Forest officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
