Today, a meeting was chaired by District Collector T.N Hariharan to discuss on restoration of water bodies and removal of Seemai Karuvellam trees.
Representatives of the 'Kulangal Paadhukappu Iyakkam' a non-profit organisation focussed on conserving water bodies, and representatives from other NGOs and environmentalists participated in the meeting.
During the meet, District Collector T.N. Hariharan emphasised on the importance of conserving water bodies and the present state of the water bodies in the city. He stressed that people should extend their co-operation to the government and these NGOs who undergo restoration work at the water bodies.
Dumping of construction debris, household wastes, plastic wastes like bottles, covers into water bodies will not only contaminate the water but will deplete the water bed completely.
When wastes are dumped into the water bodies, the pathway of the lakes/rivers will be obstructed hence flow of water from one water body to another will be completely hindered. Despite warnings, hereon if anyone dumps waste into water bodies, along with fine, strict legal action will also be initiated against them'. said District Collector.
During the meeting, District Collector also stressed on the hazards of Seemai Karuvellam trees and insisted all land owners to ensure such trees are removed from their vacant sites.
Officials from Slum Clearance board, Rural development and other departments were present during the meet.
