Residents Dissatisfied with Murky Water Supply in Kaliyamman Street, Coimbatore; Councillor Gayathri Responds

After a 12-day hiatus, when the water supply resumed in Kaliyamman Street, under Ward 44 of Coimbatore City Corporation, residents expressed dissatisfaction over the murky quality. Councillor Gayathri from Congress party sought clarifications from municipal officials.

Coimbatore: Residents of Kaliyamman Street, which falls under the jurisdiction of Ward 44 of Coimbatore City Corporation, were met with disappointment when their water supply, which resumed on February 17 after a 12-day interruption, turned out to be murky. The dissatisfaction among the community prompted immediate action from Congress Councillor Gayathri, who inquired with city municipal officials regarding the compromised water quality.

Upon investigation, it was revealed by municipal officials that the murky water was a result of mixing Siruvani drinking water with water from the Pillur-3 scheme. The discoloration was attributed to soil contamination in the new pipelines from the Pillur-3 water supply, which led to the water's murky appearance. However, officials assured that the water undergoes purification processes and quality testing before being distributed to residents.

Councillor Gayathri explained to the local community that due to the reduced quantity of water from Siruvani, it became necessary to supplement the supply with water from the Pillur-3 project. To reassure residents about the water's safety and quality, she personally drank the water in front of them, demonstrating the authorities' commitment to resolving the issue and ensuring public health.

The incident highlights the challenges of maintaining water quality in urban supply systems and the efforts of local officials to promptly address residents' concerns.
