Call for Maintenance of Netaji Sports Ground Near Udumalai

Community activists stress the urgent need for maintenance at the Netaji Sports Ground in Udumalai, highlighting health risks due to overgrown weeds and potential for athlete development with proper care.

Udumalai: The Netaji Sports Ground, located on Kalpana Road within the Udumalai municipality in the Tirupur district, has become the focal point of concern for community activists and sports enthusiasts. The ground, a hub for district, state, and rural-level competitions, sees daily visits from athletes and the general public for training and exercise. However, the lack of proper maintenance has led to the sports facility being overrun with weeds, creating a habitat for harmful pests and posing significant health risks to users.

The issue came to light following observations that, after the northeast monsoon season, no significant maintenance work was undertaken to manage the growth of Parthenium weeds, which have now proliferated across the ground. These weeds, known for their allergenic pollen and seeds, can cause respiratory problems, allergies, and skin irritation, affecting not only athletes but also children and the general public engaging in physical activities on the premises.

Despite the health hazards presented by the unchecked growth of these weeds, school administration and local authorities have not taken the necessary steps to address the situation. This negligence threatens the health and safety of those using the ground for sports like volleyball, football, basketball, and general fitness exercises. Moreover, it endangers the nurturing of future sports talents by compromising the quality of the training environment.

Community activists have voiced their concerns, urging immediate action to remove the weeds and restore the ground to a safe and usable condition. They argue that even a slight disregard for maintenance could lead to the community losing potential sports talents. Hence, there is a strong emphasis on the need for the school administration to step forward and ensure the Netaji Sports Ground receives the attention and care it desperately requires to remain a valuable asset for athlete development and public health.
