Students vow to make parents vote

On Thursday, Sivanjali V. of the Coimbatore Corporation Higher Secondary School, Oppanakara Street, took a vow to make her parents vote. She had also obtained a written undertaking from her parents.

She was one among the hundreds of Coimbatore Corporation school students who had asked their parents to given such undertaking and the students did so at the instance of Returning Officer of the Coimbatore South Assembly Constituency, P. Gandhimathi.

A release said that Ms. Gandhimathi, who is also the Deputy Commissioner, Coimbatore Corporation, had asked the education wing to involve the students in the voter awareness campaign by asking them to talk to their parents.

Declaration

The officer had also forwarded a declaration form from the district administration to be given to schools so that they could give it to the parents through the students for their signatures.

As of now, the higher secondary school students had reached out to their parents.

In the next few days, students of high, middle and elementary schools would also reach out to their parents and ask them to vote, the release added.

This was part of the Corporation’s efforts to ensure 100 per cent voting in the Coimbatore South Assembly constituency.

It had thus far conducted a few other voter awareness programmes such as organising rally, street play, signature campaign and vehicle rally.

At a programme held at the Oppanakara school, the students also vowed to ask all elders in their family and neighbourhood to vote without fail.

Only if the people voted, would they get good governance, Sivanjali said.
