Public Dispute with Traffic Inspector Over Fines in Udumalai

In Udumalai, a major altercation occurred between the public and a traffic inspector over perceived bias in imposing fines, especially following a recent crackdown on illegal parking along Kacheri Street.

Coimbatore: A significant dispute erupted in Udumalai, within the Tirupur district, involving the public and a traffic assistant inspector. This altercation was centered around the enforcement of parking fines on Kacheri Street, a busy road that houses government offices, a branch jail, a state treasury, the registrar's office, courts, and banks, making it a critical artery for access to the government hospital and witnessing high pedestrian and vehicle traffic daily. The congestion is exacerbated by vehicles parked haphazardly on both sides of the road, contributing to severe traffic jams.

The controversy sparked when a woman was fined ₹1,000 by traffic police for parking her two-wheeler in a restricted area near the public sector bank. This incident led to a heated exchange between her, other vehicle owners, and the traffic police. The aggrieved parties argued that there was no clear signage indicating parking restrictions and accused the police of discriminatory fine enforcement. Specifically, they highlighted that nearby restaurant owners and workers, who also parked their vehicles improperly, were not fined, suggesting a biased approach that disproportionately affected the less affluent.

This incident has caused significant uproar in Udumalai, drawing attention to the need for fair parking regulations and transparent enforcement practices.
