The Youth wing of BJP, Coimbatore along with the residents of Velllalore hosted a hunger-strike to shift the dump yard from Velllalore.
The sprawling Vellalore dump yard spread over 650 acres has several tonnes of wastes collected from all over the city. The residents along the dump yard have been facing unexplainable amount of health issues due to the dump yard.
The protestors alleged that segregation of wastes is done in a very shoddy way. And, dumping of tonnes of waste into the ground will contaminate the water quality and will deplete the soil resources. They also alleged that the smoke emanating from the burning of wastes has been causing respiratory problems to the residents, especially children.
'We have planned to continue our protest until a solution is derived', said the protestors.
