Mathiyarasu, a 35-year-old ration shop salesman from Goundampalayam, has been arrested for embezzling Pongal gift funds. He was responsible for distributing the Pongal gift amount of Rs. 1,000 each to 841 beneficiaries

Coimbatore: In a significant development, Mathiyarasu, a 35-year-old ration shop salesman from Goundampalayam, has been arrested for embezzling Pongal gift funds. He was responsible for distributing the Pongal gift amount of Rs. 1,000 each to 841 beneficiaries, totaling Rs. 8,41,000.

Mathiyarasu successfully distributed the amount to 721 people but failed to disburse funds to the remaining 120 beneficiaries. He was instructed on January 17 to return the undistributed amount but delayed and eventually became untraceable. His phone was found switched off, raising suspicions.

A complaint was lodged by the ration shop supervisor, Sureshkumar, at the Saibaba Colony police station. Sub Inspector Velliraj registered a case against Mathiyarasu for defrauding the public of Rs. 1,20,000, the unaccounted Pongal gift amount. He was apprehended yesterday and, following his arrest, was presented in court and remanded to judicial custody.
