Announce Tiruppur as a Drought District: Uzhavar Uzhaipalar Party Demands at Pongal Event in Dharapuram

They highlighted the plight of the farmers, stating that only about 30% of them were able to cultivate paddy due to the lack of irrigation water, leaving the remaining 70% of the land barren.

Coimbatore: The Uzhavar Uzhaipalar Party held a Pongal Day celebration at the Alagu Nachiyamman Marriage Hall in Dharapuram, Tiruppur District. The event also included a flag hoisting ceremony by the party.

Presided over by Tiruppur District leader Eswaramoorthy, the function was attended by State leader Chellamuthu, who delivered a special address. Other notable attendees included State Secretary Eswaran from Chinnakali Palayam, State Treasurer E. Balasubramaniam, and State Women's Wing Leader Rajareeka.

During the event, the party's State leader Chellamuthu informed the press that despite heavy rains causing severe damage in the northern, southern, and central districts of Tamil Nadu, Tiruppur District received negligible rainfall this year. The district's major water sources, PAP and Amaravathi reservoirs, have not received adequate water supply, severely impacting irrigation.

Chellamuthu highlighted the plight of the farmers, stating that only about 30% of them were able to cultivate paddy due to the lack of irrigation water, leaving the remaining 70% of the land barren. Crops like maize, sorghum, groundnut, and pulses have failed due to water scarcity.

He urged that a proper survey be conducted by V.A.Os to provide relief to the affected farmers. The party demanded that Tiruppur District be declared a drought-affected area by the Tamil Nadu government to safeguard the interests of farmers and livestock.

At the Pongal celebration, 20 distressed farmers were given seed materials and a cash amount of one thousand rupees each, an initiative organized by the State Women's Wing Leader Rajareeka.

Chellamuthu also announced that the Uzhavar Uzhaipalar Party will decide on potential alliances for the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections at a general meeting on February 6th, commemorating the birthday of Uzhavar Perunthagai Narayanasamy Naidu.

This Pongal event by the Uzhavar Uzhaipalar Party not only celebrated the festival but also addressed critical issues faced by farmers in the region, calling for immediate government action.
