City-based GEM Hospital (Gastroenterology Medical Centre and Hospital) has successfully performed the first robotic pancreatic surgery on a 54-year-old patient from Namakkal.
Chellamal from Namakkal was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was treated of the cancer successfully by robotic Whipple operation recently.

According to Dr.Palanivelu, Chairman of Gem Hospital, 'Pancreatic cancer operation is the most complex operation and only experts can perform successfully. Due to lack of expertise majority of the patients undergo open method with wide abdominal incision which leads to increased rate of infection, wound gapping, hernia etc.
Further to improve the curing rate, robotic surgery was recently launched in Gem Hospital. The magnification combined with 3D enhanced vision enables perfect pancreatic anastomosis resulting in very low pancreatic duct leakage. S I Robotic Da Vinci with ICG Fluroscene enables mapping lymphatic and vascular cancer spread and enhances the radical clearance.
Patients shared that with robotic surgery there is less pain and the hospital stay is too shorter and they are able to get back to normal routine soon. The hospital so far has successfully completed 20 robotic cancer surgeries for Easophagus, stomach, rectum, liver, kidney, intestine and uterus in the last two months', Dr.Palanivelu said.
