Public Protest for Removal of Sudden Median on National Highway in Pollachi

Leaders of four village councils in Pollachi spearheaded a public road blockade, protesting against the newly installed central median on the Udumalai National Highway, causing significant traffic disruption.

Coimbatore: On January 8th, a significant public protest erupted in Pollachi on the Udumalai National Highway. The unrest was led by the heads of four village councils – Chinnampalayam, Makkinampatti, Solapaalayam, and Oonjavalaampatti. The protest was against the sudden installation of center medians by highway authorities, which has caused considerable inconvenience to the local residents.

Approximately 25,000 families residing across various hamlets along the highway, which previously had access points, now face a 2-kilometer detour to reach their destinations. This has affected the daily commute of general public, students, and workers.

Moreover, the iron barriers in the median have been cited as a cause for increased accidents and fatalities in the area. Despite complaints to the authorities, no action was taken, leading to this public agitation.

After prolonged negotiations by the police with the protesters, an assurance was given that the center medians would be removed. This led to the dispersal of the protest, which had caused about an hour of traffic disruption on the Udumalai National Highway.
