Coimbatore: The TN-IAM Project funded Price Forecasting Scheme of the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore has developed market advisory for Red Chillies.

Chilli is a vital and the most extensively cultivated spice in India, and the nation takes great pride in its chilli production and export achievements. According to the First Advance Estimates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (2022-23) the area under red chilli is 8.52 lakhs hectare with a production of 19.58 lakhs tonnes. Major chilli growing states are Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, West Bengal, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu contributing nearly 93 per cent of total production of chillies.

Chillies are commonly used in three forms viz., fresh green chillies, red chilli powder and raw red chillies. Indian chilli is highly favored for its two crucial commercial attributes like vivid color and pungency levels. Notably, Indian chilli is primarily exported to various Asian countries, including China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Singapore, Thailand and the UAE.

During 2022-23, Tamil Nadu produced 0.22 lakh tonnes of dry/red chillies from an area of 0.49 lakh hectares. Mundu and sannam are major types of chillies grown in Tamil Nadu. Mundu is grown in Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi whereas sannam is grown in Sivagangai, Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli Districts. Sowing of chillies will be taken up during October in major chilli growing districts.

In Tamil Nadu, it is cultivated as single-crop. Hence, traders tend to accumulate their stock during the harvesting period to fulfill the year-round demand. In this situation, Price Forecasting Scheme has analyzed the past 15 years of red chilli prices that prevailed at Tirunelveli regulated market for sannam variety. The analysis and traders survey results showed that the farm gate price for sannam variety will rule around Rs. 200-210 per kg at the time of harvesting. Hence, the farmers are advised to take up sowing decision accordingly. The price may subject to change based on the monsoon and arrivals from other states.
