TNAU conducts National Workshop - 'Self-reliant farmers: Empowering Farmers through Agrometeorological Advisory Services in Changing Climate'

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s Agro Climate Research Centre in collaboration with the Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi, India Meteorological Department, New Delhi, Association of Agrometeorologists and National Bank for Rural Agricultural Development jointly organized a National workshop on "Self-reliant farmers: Empowering farmers through Agrometeorological advisory services in changing climate" at TNAU on 08th November 2023.

Dr. M.K. Kalarani, Director (Crop Management) welcomed the farmers and the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr. V. Geethalakshmi, TNAU, Chief Guest Shri.D.Senthil Pandiyan IAS, Joint Secretary and Chief Vigilance Officer and other dignitaries Dr.S.C.Bhan, Head AAS Division, IMD, New Delhi, Dr.Jagvir Singh, Advisor and Head of the Outreach Division (MoES), Dr.S. Balachandran, Director, RMC, Chennai, Dr.K.K.Singh, President, Association of Agrometeorologists (AAM), Mr.Thirumalai Rao, AGM, NABARD and Dr.P.P.Murugan, Director, Extension Education, TNAU, Coimbatore, Retired Professors from Agro Climate Research Centre and also the farmers.



Dr.V.Geethalakshmi, in her inaugural address elucidated about the seasonal rainfall forecast given at district level for both South West and North East monsoons in Tamil Nadu. D.Senthil Pandiyan IAS, in his keynote address explained about the structure and functions of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). Dr.S.C. Bhan praised the efforts made by TNAU for creating the dense weather network that helps monitoring the extreme events and improve the agro-advisory services. Dr. Jagvir Singh expressed that the Scientists should make a lot of efforts to take up climate variability research in agriculture. Dr.S.Balachandran, DDGM, highlighted the IMD services to the farming community.

Dr.K.K.Singh thanked the TNAU for its significant contributions to the farming community to tackle various weather extremes. Mr.Thirumalai Rao, AGM highlighted that the main goal of NABARD is to achieve sustainable agriculture through implementing various schemes to the farming community. Dr.P.P.Murugan, DEE articulated the need for weather based farming decisions to save the agricultural inputs.

Around 400 farmers from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Dindigul districts actively participated, interacted with scientists and benefitted through this awareness program. Awareness on weather forecast, mobile-apps and TNAU - Agro Advisory Services to the farmers were highlighted. The program concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr.N.K.Sathyamoorthy Professor and Head, ACRC to the dignitaries and the farmers.
