Tirupur: Farmers have warned the Tamil nadu government that they will gherao the secretariat in Chennai if it does not stop acquiring land.
The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department and the Wakf Board have been engaged in the illegal expropriation of more than 12 lakh acres of land across Tamil Nadu by enacting and implementing the Small Inams Act, 1963 by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
In some areas, acquisition of cultivated lands is also being taken up.
Farmers belonging to the Inam farmers, tenants and house owners' movement and The Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association staged a protest in front of the Tirupur Kumaran Memorial demanding that this be scrapped.
If the Tamil Nadu government does not pay heed to this, they will soon gherao the secretariat and stage a protest.
As part of the protest, men shaved their heads and women shouted slogans to express their demands.
An argument broke out between the farmers and the police when the police tried to remove the farmers who were standing in the shade of the Kumaran memorial as the farmers had announced that they would continue to protest till evening.
