Railway infrastructure should be upgraded in Coimbatore - Unions demand

Railway unions have demanded that infrastructure be created in Coimbatore, which is the third largest contributor to revenue for the Southern Railway, for which the General Manager of southern railway should immediately give its nod.

Coimbatore: Railway associations have demanded that the General Manager of Southern Railway should immediately give his nod for improving railway infrastructure in Coimbatore.

The Railway Board is seeking a feasibility report from the zonal and divisional authorities for using the pitline and the stapleing line for the maintenance of new trains in Coimbatore. Due to constraints in maintenance facilities, no new trains were allowed from Coimbatore.

To overcome these hurdles, the Salem division of southern railway proposed additional bitlines, stabiling lines and some facilities at Mettupalayam and Pothanur in Coimbatore district to develop this infrastructure.

The Salem division sent a detailed project report to the headquarters of Southern Railway for approval. Once the project receives financial approval, the work will start immediately and will be completed within a year.

The railway associations in Coimbatore district have requested the General Manager of Southern Railway to immediately send the necessary approval for the creation of infrastructure in Coimbatore, which is the third largest contributor in revenue to the Southern Railway after Chennai Central and Egmore.

With this, trains will run to Rameswaram, Thoothukudi, Madurai, Shencottah and Dindigul in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, as well as new trains to Bengaluru, Chennai Egmore, Karaikal, Tiruchendur, Bodinayakkanur and Thiruvananthapuram.

It is the responsibility of railways to plan in advance and develop the structures to expand the structures in line with the development of the cities.

As far as Coimbatore is concerned, it is reasonable to expect. Because to that extent it gives revenue not only to the railways but also to the central and state governments.
