Tirupur: A massive fire breaks out at Kaderpet's Baniyan market - More than 50 stores were destroyed in the fire, which damaged goods worth Rs 1 crore.
The district collector said that the damage value will be examined and compensation will be discussed.
Kaderpet, a baniyan market, is functioning in Royapuram, the heart of Tirupur Corporation. There are more than 1,000 commercial establishments selling knitwear fabrics ranging from small to large. Shops in the Baniyan market are functioning with tin sheets.
There are almost 50 shops here that buy baniyan fabrics in bulk and sell them to people outside of the districts and states.
As usual, everyshops in the market was locked by 9 p.m., and the neighbours were horrified to witness a fire quickly erupting from Baniyan Bazaar.
After promptly contacting the fire department, vehicles were rushed from Tirupur North, South, Avinashi, Palladam, and other districts to extinguish the fire.
However, as the fire could not be put out immediately due to water scarcity, the water was brought in by municipal water tankers and private water tankers and firefighters fought for more than two hours to control the fire.
Fortunately, no one was injured or lost their lives due to the closure of all the shops. Tirupur South MLA Selvaraj, District Collector Christuraj, Sub-Collector Sruthan Jainarayanan and Corporation Commissioner Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar rushed to the spot and intensified the fire fighting operations.
Speaking to reporters after the firefighting operations, the District Collector said that more than 50 shops in Kadarpet area have been damaged due to the fire. The value of the damage will be examined and compensation will be discussed after the inspection, he said, adding that the fire has been doused by 6 fire tenders and more than 10 water lorries.
The MLA, sub-collector, municipal commissioner, and police said that the fire department acted swiftly to douse the fire and there was no injury or loss of life as the shops were locked.
The police have initiated a preliminary investigation into the livelihood that the fire was caused by an electrical leak. According to the fire brigade, the fire started in the middle of Baniyan Bazaar and spread to both sides. Buildings were also damaged as a result of the fire that broke out in surrounding buildings. The traders who were affected by the fire said that they were devastated by the accident. They have requested the district administration to take steps to disburse the compensation amount to them as they do not know what to do next.
